IGCSE 0580 Mathematics tutor, in a group of ten

I teach the whole Cambridge IGCSE 0580 syllabus, Core and Extended, in a weekly online class. There is a past-paper question on the board every session, because the syllabus is not the same thing as the exam.

What we cover

Every topic on the 0580 syllabus

The class runs on a cycle through the nine syllabus areas, then turns to full papers in the run-up to the exam session. Core and Extended students sit in the same room; the Extended-only material is flagged as we go and set as separate work.

Number

Fractions, ratio, percentage change, standard form, bounds, and the money questions that carry easy marks.

Algebra and graphs

Rearranging, simultaneous and quadratic equations, sequences, inequalities, and reading graphs properly.

Coordinate geometry

Gradient, midpoint, the equation of a line, and parallel and perpendicular conditions.

Geometry and mensuration

Circle theorems, similar shapes, surface area and volume, including the compound solids.

Trigonometry

Right-angled and non-right-angled triangles, bearings, and three-dimensional problems.

Transformations and vectors

Describing transformations in exam language, column vectors, and vector geometry proofs.

Probability

Tree diagrams, Venn diagrams, and the conditional cases where students usually lose the second mark.

Statistics

Averages from tables, cumulative frequency, histograms with unequal widths, and scatter graphs.

Exam technique

Reading the command word, showing the working the marking scheme wants, and managing the clock.

How a session runs

Ninety minutes, one topic, real questions

I teach the topic, then we work an exam-style question together, then you try one while I watch. Being wrong out loud is the point, and that is what the group is for.

  • Ten students, maximum
  • Online, over video, with a shared whiteboard
  • Recording and worked solutions the same night
  • A short problem set each week
  • Questions answered between classes on WhatsApp
FAQ

Questions parents ask about the 0580 class

Is the class for Core or Extended?

Both. The teaching covers the shared syllabus for everyone, and the Extended-only topics are flagged and set as separate work. Tell me which tier your student is entered for when you write to me.

My child is in the exam year. Is it too late to join?

No. Mid-year joiners are normal. In the run-up to a session the class turns to full papers, which is useful whether or not you were there for the topic cycle.

Can we try one session first?

Yes. You can sit in on a single session at the drop-in rate before committing to the month. Ask me for it when you write.

What if we miss a session?

You get the recording and the worked solutions, the same as everyone else.
